Preparing Photos for Production using Photoshop

Step 1
Change the color mode of the photo to CMYK using the Image Menu-> Mode-> CMYK

Step 2
Crop the photo using the Crop Tool. Remember the Rule Of Thirds, Composition, Background, etc.

Step 3

Adjust the Levels of the photo to create better contrast and lighting. Image Menu-> Adjustments-> Levels
Use the Black, Gray, & White triangles under the Histogram to adjust.

Bad Levels- Not enough of what level?
Better Levels- Could bring in more black & white.
Step 4
Check the levels of magenta and yellow. These two colors seem to stand out when printed on the Daily Ledger's press. If the level is too high, the faces of people will look like they are sunburnt or have to go to the bathroom really bad. We can check the amount of these colors by using the eyedropper tool. Click on the Eyedropper Tool and open the Info Window under the Window Menu. Move the eyedropper over the face. The Info Window will show you the % of each color. We are mainly concerned with % of Yellow and Magenta. Adjust the level of these colors to below 37% using the Image Menu->Adjustments->Levels. Choose the correct color level from where it says CMYK. Use the sliders to adjust the amount of the color. Recheck the face using the eyedropper while you are still in the Levels menu.

Step 5
Perform a Save As... Choose Photoshop EPS on the format menu... Rename according to your article... Choose the proper folder... Click the Save button... Click Ok.
