Freshman Academy
Welcome to CHS Freshman Academy!
The Freshman Academy has been established to build a greater sense of school community among freshman students. The program aims to ensure a successful transition from middle school to high school while supporting the district’s long-term goals for improved student achievement. The Academy will focus on creating a school culture in which each student is supported by adults and peers. All new freshmen will actively participate in the Freshman Academy.
By placing students on a team with core teachers and by modifying the students’ schedules according to their team, we will be able to strengthen a true team concept. We believe that this team structure will build a stronger school community that will encourage more meaningful relationships, increase attendance rates, and develop study skills necessary to improve student achievement and ensure that all students who graduate from Canton High School are college and career ready.
The Freshman Academy will have classes that meet the needs of all students from the struggling learners who will have support systems in place to meet their needs, to the accelerated learners who will participate in the honors level courses. All students will benefit from shared academy goals such as: increase student attendance, support student academic success, provide credit acquisition, facilitate a smooth transition into the high school environment, and address student disciplinary concerns.
Freshman Academy Mission Statement: “Creating a successful transition through positive relationships, student responsibility, and academic rigor.”
