Homebound Services
Home Instruction Information for Parents and StudentsHome instruction can be provided to a student when a physician licensed to practice medicine all its branches determines that the student will be absent from school for at least two consecutive weeks (10 school days) due to a health or medical impairment. When the certification statement is provided by a physician on ISBE form 34-58, education services may begin.
The goal of home instruction is to afford the student experiences equivalent to those afforded to other students at the same grade level. Such experiences are designed to enable the student to return to the classroom. Thus, the content of the instruction, generally academic, is to enable the student to remain synchronized with the other students in his or her class. It is important that parents and students understand the limitations of home instruction. Typically a student will receive an hour of service per school day. During this time our home instructor provides assignments, proctors exams and tutors as time allows. Students are expected to complete self study in addition to their instructional time with the home instructor. As a result, it is in the best educational interest of students to return to school as soon as possible.
It is also important to recognize that not all elective class content can be addressed in a homebound format; therefore, lengthy absences may result in credit deficits for some students. It is helpful for the school district to receive detailed information regarding a student’s limitations.
