National Honor Society- The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. NHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1921. The Canton Chapter of the National Honor Society was formed in 1964 for the purpose of recognizing outstanding Canton High School students. Each year, the local selection committee, known as the Faculty Council, reviews juniors and seniors for possible induction into the Society. NHS is more than just an honor roll. The Canton Chapter has established rules for membership that are based upon a student's outstanding performance in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. These four criteria for selection form the foundation upon which the organization and its activities are built. Induction into NHS is not an award for past accomplishments; it is recognition for who you are. On occasion, the chapter also supports and participates in the activities of other organizations to provide for a more positive experience at Canton High School. Every NHS member is automatically eligible for senior of the year, voted on by the senior class at the end of the school year.
